Recovering from Infertility

Chinese medicine may be used on its own or in combination with IVF or other forms of assisted reproduction. In a recent study, Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture have been shown to result in a high success rate of pregnancy in infertile couples (Journal of Chinese Medicine 2006; 80; 20-8). It has shown improvements in quality and number of eggs and in the thickness of the uterine wall, all of which could help to explain its success.

Chinese medicine treatment is tailored to you as an individual. The practitioner will take note of your medical history, the characteristics of your menstrual cycle and your general health. The aim of treatment will be to regulate the cycle and support ovulation or implantation. A minimum of three months’ treatment can be expected in the case of unexplained infertility.

WHAT OUR PATIENT SAY

"I've been to numerous herbalists and Dr. TCM is above and beyond the best. We don't speak each other's language but his herbs always work. He is incredible and I only wish I had heard of him earlier. "

John J

I gave up smoking almost two years ago thanks to acupuncture. First I had a 45-minute massage and then the acupuncture, which was incredibly relaxing. I didn’t even feel the needles. My acupuncturist left four little ball-like pellets on pressure points in one ear (they’re stuck on with little clear plasters; you can’t see them). She said to leave them there until they fell off after about a week. The theory is that they are placed on various pressure points that have different points that have different effects on the mind and body. One of my points was for will power. So every time you feel a cigarette you squeeze one of these points and then the craving goes away. I went back for a follow-up appointment (£45 each time) two weeks later. She did the same again, but this time she left the pellets in my other ear. After a couple of weeks, the cravings disappeared and I was able to go out and socialise with smoking friends without needing a cigarette.

Last year I developed tennis elbow. The pain was so bad, during one game, that not only could I not grip the racket, I was unable to turn a door handle afterwards. I tried physio but to no effect. Resting the arm didn’t make any difference, either. On a friend’s recommendation, I went to the local Chinese Medicine Centre. The needles felt irritating when they were inserted around the elbow, but I wasn’t expecting the heat – the needles were attached to an electromagnet which heated their points. It seemed like a highly efficient equivalent to administering Deep Heat. Each Session lasted about half an hour. Immediately, I could feel a difference – the arm felt looser, the tightening that had caused the tennis elbow was disappearing. After three sessions, I was able to return to the tennis court – something I had started to despair of doing.

What We Can Help?

TCM’s view of the body places little emphasis on anatomical structures, but is mainly concerned with the identification of functional entities.

In Chinese medicine the treatment of arthritis involves the herb remedy which is effective in reducing the swelling in acute arthritis, and acupuncture which is usually helping to relieve the pain.

Chinese medicine is excellent in the treatment of eczema, psoriasis or acne skin disorder. The herbs will help to reduceor eliminate itching, and reduce the inflammation of the skin; acupuncture is also helpful to relieve stress, reduce the itchiness and improve the healing process (British Journal of Dermatology, 1992, 126: 179-84);

TCM sees this as the result of heat, damp and blood stagnation in the anus, and the treatment will remove the stagnation, cool the heat and stimulate blood flow. Chinese herbs provides an very effective relief; special dieting is important.

IBS is an intestinal disorder causing a variety of symptoms which may include cramping, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, and irregular bowels. Symptoms are frequently triggered by stress, or the indigestion of food. An Australian study published in 1998 in the Journal of the American Medical Association lends strong scientific support that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine work for IBS symptoms. With regular acupuncture treatments, some lifestyle changes, and herbal tea, a lot of success and immense relief of symptoms observed in those suffering from IBS. Acupuncture is very good at reducing stress which often causes IBS symptoms.

Acupuncture can help women suffering from the most common symptoms of the menopause. A study suggests that receiving regularly the ancient Chinese needle therapy can curb the severity of hot flushes and also relieve mood swings, the symptoms are linked to hormone imbalances. In the study, which was published in the Journal Acupuncture in Medicine, the researchers looked at 53 women who had 10 sessions acupuncture treatment and they had lower scores for the intensity of the hot flushes and mood swings which progressively improved over the treatment period (Daily Mail, Tuesday March 8, 2011, Page 5).

TCM consider male sexual impotence to be due to weakness of the kidneys; anxiety and stress, can also cause impotence. Taking herb tonic to improve the conditions.

Warts are caused by viral infection. The warts lotion, exclusively from Dr TCM clinics, can help you to remove the warts in a few days without pains. In addition, drinking anti-virus tea to stop its reoccurrence.

Cold and flu viruses attack the nose, nasal sinuses, throat and the upper breathing tubes (trachea and bronchi). As they invade the moist skin lining of these structures, they cause runny nose, sinus congestion, sneezing, sore throat and cough. Fever might also occur usually with the flu. These symptoms begin 1-4 days after contact with the virus and usually last 5-7 days, but can linger on, and should be alert to the possibility of a more serious infection.

Acupuncture helps to stop the craving, and also helps with the withdrawal symptoms. In addition, taking herbal tea to detoxify the lung.

In order for a woman to conceive, she must ovulate. The egg must travel through the fallopian tube towards the uterus and a man’s sperm must fertilise the egg along the way. Finally the fertilised egg must implant into the wall of the uterus. Some of the main causes of infertility in women are; endometriosis (where parts of the uterine wall are deposited in the abdomen outside the uterus itself), ovulation problems, poor egg quality, polycystic ovary syndrome, and fallopian tube blockages. In men problems may be caused by low sperm count or sperm abnormalities.

However, in many cases the infertility is unexplained, with no underlying problems that can be identified.

The aim of treatment will be to regulate the cycle and support ovulation or implantation. A minimum of three months’ treatment can be expected in the case of unexplained infertility.

Although with underlying problems such as endometriosis treatment tends to be longer; improvement may be seen in other changes as well such as a reduction in the severity of period pain. Acupuncture also help with male fertility. Acupuncture can significantly improve the production of healthy sperms by balancing and strengthening the functions of the male reproductive organs, and increase the quantity of sperm produced and improve sperm quality and motility.

Most IVF failures are not because there are not enough embryos. It is when the embryo is put back into the womb and fails to implant. Many patients have therefore been asked to have the acupuncture during their IVF treatment.

Acupuncture support patients physically and mentally during and after the IVF procedures; The treatment helps to relax the uterus, improve the blood flow to the uterus and ovaries; thickening the endometrial lining and calm the uterus so that implantation is more likely. Often in IVF, the embryo transfer process stimulates uterine contractions which can make implantation difficult. This is why studies suggest that acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer increase success rates significantly. The continued acupuncture treatment for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is highly recommended to maintain the pregnancy and minimize the risk of miscarriage, it is also helpful for morning sickness, fatigue and mood swings.

TCM’s view of the body places little emphasis on anatomical structures, but is mainly concerned with the identification of functional entities (which regulate digestion, breathing, aging etc.). While health is perceived as harmonious interaction of these entities and the outside world, disease is interpreted as a disharmony in interaction. TCM diagnosis includes in tracing symptoms to patterns of an underlying disharmony, by measuring the pulse, inspecting the tongue, skin, eyes and by looking at the eating and sleeping habits of the patient as well as many other things.
